This course will address practical considerations and “bias busting” strategies to reduce bias in the courts. Presentation will focus on the science behind implicit bias and when we are most susceptible to it; common types of bias that show up in the courts; microaggressions and the biases in our language and behaviors; and practical strategies to mitigate bias and cultivate a more inclusive courtroom environment.
Our speaker, Lisa Wachtell is a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) practitioner and consultant. Lisa partners with organizations to develop and integrate effective DEIB principles and strategies into their business practices and company cultures. Lisa has successfully designed and launched practical DEIB strategies, executed actionable implementation plans, and learning/training programs that focus on “meeting organizations where they’re at” and moving the needle to motivate sustainable organizational and behavioral change.
Lisa holds her M.B.A. from Stanford’s Graduate School of Business, a Certificate in Diversity & Inclusion for Human Resources from Cornell University, and a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania. In addition, Lisa is a Course Facilitator and Coach for Stanford’s Graduate School of Business LEAD leadership certificate program. During this presentation Lisa will go over:
- What is DEIB and why does it matter in the courtroom.
- Implicit bias and the science behind it
- Recognizing common biases
- Language, microaggressions, and their impact
- “Bias busting” — cultivating a more inclusive courtroom environment.
- Keeping it real!

Cost: Free for SMCBA members, $20 for non-members. Cost includes 1.0 hour of Implicit Bias MCLE credit.
