In conjunction with other local Bar Associations, SMCBA will help host this year’s BAWLR (Bay Area Women Lawyers’ Retreat) event scheduled for Friday, March 25-Sunday, March 27, 2022 at the Silverado Resort in Napa! You do not want to miss this spectacular event. Speakers include Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye and Honorable LaDoris Cordell, among other well-respected women in the legal field.
Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye was born in Sacramento, California as Tani Gorre Cantil and was raised in the Land Park neighborhood of Sacramento. In 1977 she earned her high school diploma form C.K. McClatchy High School and in 1978 her Associate of Arts from Sacramento City College. In 1980, Chief Justice Tani graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Davis. In 1984, she received her J.D. degree from UC Davis School of Law. In 1984, Deputy District Attorney Russell Hom recruited Cantil to come to the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office. Chief Justice Tani has also advocated for additional court funding, has supproted civil discourse education for students, and has cautioned people about the unintended consequences of arrests of undocumented immigrants by federal agents at California state courthouses.
Honorable LaDoris Cordell is an American retired judge of the Superior Court of California. She is an advocate for improving transparency into charges of police misconduct. She was the first female African-American judge in Northern California and the first female African-American Superior Court judge in Santa Clara County, California. She Honorable LaDoris Cordell received her BA from Antioch College in 1971 and her JD degree from Stanford Law School in 1974. In 1975, she was the first person in the Western United States to serve as the Earl Warren Intern at the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund. From 1976 to 1982, she practiced as a private attorney in East Palo Alto, CA, specializing in criminal defense law, personal injury law, family law, and federal civil rights law. She has received numerous awards and prizes for social activism and breaking race and gender barriers, including the Rose Bird Memorial Award from the California Women Lawyers and the Rosa Parks Ordinary People Award from the NAACP.
