This image has an empty alt attributeNancy de Ita joined the San Mateo County Bar Association (SMCBA) in 1981 after passing the California State Bar. She volunteered on various committees and ultimately became President of the Association. She was the Association’s tenth woman president in 2009.

During her presidency, Nancy de Ita improved the diversity of SMCBA by joining all the local minority bar associations and encouraging their members to join the Bar Association!

She then created SMCBA’s Diversity Task Force. This task force later became a standing committee of the Bar Association in 2010, now known as the Diversity Committee.

The Nancy de Ita Scholarship was created in 2018 and is given to an incoming/current law student, or recent graduate who has not passed the bar exam to encourage and support their commitment to the legal profession and diversify our community.

The San Mateo County Bar Association’s Diversity Committee announces its 2019 Nancy de Ita Scholarship. The $2,000 scholarship is open to all incoming and currently registered law students. To apply, please email Monica Castillo, Esq. a 1000 word (max) essay on the topic “How Diversity Strengthens Our Profession.”  The essay must be received no later than 5:00 pm on Friday, May 31, 2019.  The winner(s) will be notified in July, and must attend the 2019 Speaker Series event held in October.
